I assume he meant that the affair consumed only 1% of his life while it was going on. The rest was spent, presumably, caring for his brave, cancer-stricken wife and making campaign promises to the effect that if he were elected President, people like Christopher Reeve would be able to walk again, or that he, Edwards, would feed 5000 people with five loaves and two fishes.
I never was impressed with Edwards, and this doesn't improve my opinion of him at all. Rielle Hunter just may have done all of us a favor by facilitating his removal from the stage of national politics.
